In 2002, we experienced a spy film with a difference - the use of an extreme sports enthusisast to do the government's work. Hardman actor Vion Diesel had the title role of XXX.

The Plot

Following the loss of an agent, and in his desire to infiltrate a Russian crime circle, NSA Agent Gibbons convinces underground sports enthusiast Xander Cage (XXX) to do the dirty work in return for being left alone by the government. Cage accepts, and needs to use all his extreme experience to survive, let alone do the job he's enlisted for.

The Cast and Performances

Vin Diesel is Cage, the agent known as XXX. His acting is kind of monotone, and the action scenes are where he excels. Each time his acting needs some emotional input, it is lacking. Samuel L Jackson is convincing as Agent Gibbons, but even he is below par in comparison to his usual high standards. Asia Argento is sexy as Yelena, and they are all supported by a decent cast.

My Opinion

This is harmless action. There is no particular great acting on show, and the plot does not tackle the mind, but it is fun, and enetertaining, and the scenes are beautiful. The direction from Rob Cohen ensures a certain flow to the film, which I am thankful for. If there had been a change in the mood or pace of the film, I think I would probably be rating this a lot lower.

Conclusion

Fun action romp.

I rate this film as 3 stars out of 5.
