‘Y Tu Mama Tambien’ is another film that can be considered as part of the recent Mexican/Latin American new wave cinema that includes ‘Amores Perros’, ‘El Mariachi’ and ‘City of God’ to name just a few. TWO’S COMPANY, THREE’S A CROWD Tenoch and Julio are two Mexican teenagers; one summer when their girlfriends are away they decide to try their luck with Luisa an older woman they meet at a wedding. Spinning her a tale of a beautiful secluded beach called Boca del Cielo they invite Luisa to accompany them on a road trip across Mexico hoping that the trip will also give them an opportunity to seduce her to their surprise and delight she accepts. note: also appears in part on Flixster and The Student Room Alfonso Cuarón amazes me - he has made the very popular films Children of Men and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, but before that, he made a little film called Y tu mamá también, a heartfelt and grand love letter to Mexico that takes the familiar road trip premise and turns it almost entirely on its head. The film revolves around two young boys, average kid Julio (Gael Garcia Bernal), and his rich kid best friend Tenoch (Diego Luna), and an older woman named Luisa (Maribel Verdú). Their girlfriends venture off to Italy, so the two go off on their own existential adventure where, ... Read the complete review

Before seeing ‘Y Tu Mama Tambien’ (‘and your mother too’) at the cinema I’d not come across a negative review for it and I fear that this will be the lone dissenter amongst thousands of fans. The words ‘road movie’ and ‘coming of age tale’ usually conjure up images of those dubious Hollywood films ‘Road Trip’ and ‘American Pie’ (I seem to be the only person who didn’t enjoy the latter) but since this was made independently and had succeeded at the more prestigious film festivals it seemed logical, if a little naïve, to anticipate cinema that left these productions as mere dots on a ... Y Tu Mama Tambien This is not a typical teenage comedy about coming of age. Set in Mexico this film follows Tenoch (Diego Luna) and Julio (Gael Garcia Bernal) two 17 year old friends who come from very different backgrounds but are best friends. Tenoch is the son of a wealthy politician and has a nanny to cater to his needs while Julio is the son of a single mother living in a grotty housing complex. The guys have a long summer of freedom having left high school, bother their girlfriends head to Europe for holidays so they decide to enjoy their freedom during one final summer before they have to take responsibility for themselves and their ... The Mexican film industry is very much in fashion at the moment, especially after the critical success of Amores Perros. Alfonso Cuarón, the director and co-writer of Y Tu Mamá También (And Your Mother Too), is one of its leading lights, having already been appropriated by Hollywood to make Great Expectations, but here returns to his native Mexico. The story is that of two teenagers, middle class Julio (Gael Garcia Bernal) and rich kid Tenoch (Diego Luna), and a woman. After their girlfriends go off to spend the summer in Italy, they spend their time as teenage friends do - smoking pot, masturbating and trying to get laid. At a wedding involving Tenoch's ...
