Lightweight but sporadically entertaining (Yes Man (DVD))

Advantages: Some amusing consequences caused by always saying 'yes'

Disadvantages: Script a little predictable in places

In 'Yes Man' Jim Carrey plays a downtrodden individual who is unhappy with his job and who has effectively put an end to his social life since the break-up of his marriage. A chance encounter with an old acquaintance leads to a trip to a self-help seminar where he is encouraged to say 'yes' to every situation with which he is confronted. With little going right in his life, he decides to give it a shot, and needless to say the consequences of this approach are genrally very positive.

This movie is essentially a vehicle for Jim Carrey, whilst also trying to make a point about the benefits of being positive in one's approach to life. It does not quite work, but is not completely without merit or funny moments. It is one of those movies which had I forked out for cinema tickets, babysitter etc, I would have felt a bit short changed, but if you are looking for a relatively amusing and undemanding way to pass an hour and a half on a long haul flight, for example, it certainly has enough for me to recommend it. As others have mentioned, it does bear strong similarities to 'Liar Liar' and Carrey has undoubtedly made better films ('The Truman Show' being the most obvious example), but he has also made a lot worse as those who have suffered 'Me Myself and Irene' and 'The Number 23' would testify! Zooey Deschanel also does a nice job as the love interest. So overall, worth a watch, but don't expect too much.
