Advantages: Very funny, Zooey Deschanel and Carrey are excellent, original
Disadvantages: I wish Carrey tuned down the crazy in parts
Whenever I see Jim Carrey, Ace Ventura is always the first image in my head. It will always be that way but it doesn't mean he's not an excellent actor who can most definitely play more than one role, as he shows with Yes man as well as numerous other titles.
Carrey plays Carl, a banker who says no to life. He's ignoring his best friend to stay at home each night watching rented movies alone, he's divorced, seemingly unhappy and unmotivated to live. Carl gets a wake up call when an old friend invites him to a "Yes" seminar and he takes up the challenge to say yes to everything... and I mean everything, as you will see in the movie! I'm not going to go anymore into the detail of the plot as I don't want to spoil how it turns out and where it leads.
Jim Carrey plays Carl very well but my only complaint with him is that he turns the crazy on a little too much in certain scenes. What I mean by this is that Carl Allen is a banker, his best friend is a lawyer and the girl he is falling for (Zooey Deschanel as Allison) is hot so when he acts like a lunatic on speed it makes the film a little less credible and believable. For example, the scene where he does an all-nighter drinking Red Bull is too far for me, the faces Carrey made reminded me of Ace Ventura, not a banker trying to impress a girl. The plot as a whole is too convenient also. The perfect girl for him just happens to walk into his life as he starts saying "yes" to everything, as well as all the other things that happen, but it doesn't stop it from being enjoyable.
Yes man still has plenty of great comedy. There are a lot of small scenes that will make you laugh and the relationship between Carl and Allison is very well done, especially when they first meet. In fact, that whole section is probably my favourite (starting with the homeless guy) and overall I think Deschanel's performance is slightly better than Carrey's. "Norm" was excellent and his accent and personality are hilarious.
The movie has a positive and enthusiastic message, and I would definitely recommend it. It mixes drama with comedy without being just another rom-com but does have its flaws.
On a side note... does anyone else think that when Carrey says "You know what? That sounds like a fu*kin' great idea!" he sounds just like Patrick Bateman? I did.
Summary: Highly recommend you watch this one
