Advantages: Great supporting cast

Disadvantages: Extras, although plentiful, are a bit dull

'Yes Man' is directed by Peyton Reed, and stars Jim Carrey, Zooey Deschanel (Elf, The Happening), and Bradley Cooper (He's Just Not That Into You, The Hangover). The movie is very loosely based on Danny Wallace's book of the same name (look out for a cameo from Danny during the bridal shower scenes) and sees Jim Carrey play Carl; divorced, working for a finance company, and avoiding socialising with his friends. When he bumps into an old friend, he is dragged along to a 'Yes!' seminar, where Carl gets caught up in the moment and vows to say yes to absolutely everything. What starts out as a fun challenge ,providing Carl with exciting new opportunities, the chance to reconnect with his friends, and a coincidental meeting with the kooky Allison (played by Deschanel), unfortunately starts to go downhill after a run-in with the authorities, and being a 'Yes Man' suddenly doesn't seem so appealing.

DVD Extras

As well as the usual scene selection and language/subtitle options, there are 2 behind the scenes features; 'Down Time on the set of Yes Man' and 'Jim Carrey: Extreme Yes Man', neither of which are great. There are also 5 performances from 'Proxy' - Allison's band, and a spoof MTV style documentary about the band. Finally we have the gag reel which is basically 5 minutes of Carrey mugging at the camera.

I think Jim Carrey has perhaps started to grow out of his typical goofy, funny-man roles, as he just seemed so much older than his friends and girlfriend, which made the relationships in the movie a little bit unbelievable. Otherwise the cast is great, in particular Rhys Darby who plays Carl's over-enthusiastic boss.

Despite my criticisms, I really did enjoy the film (and went on to read the book, which is fantastic). It's fun, heart-warming, and it might just inspire you to try something different.

Summary: A good film, inspired by a great book
