Jim Carrey stars in his best film in a long time as Carl, a guy who, after being dumped by his girlfriend, loses his confidence and in the process, a lot of his friends because of his lifestyle of living like a hermit and not wanting to socialise with anybody. He leads a simple life: he goes to work, comes home and that's it.
But when he is told by someone that a development program can change his atttitude by saying "yes" to everything, he gives it a try and his life changes rapidly, giving him a new outlook on life but hillarious problems and challenges ensue.
Carrey is back to hillarious form here and I would say this is his best film since, perhaps, Liar Liar or Dumb and Dumber.
There are times when Carrey goes into "silly mode" with his comedy and to me, it's not funny but there's minimal silly comedy here and a lot of the comedy happens because of the situations his character gets himself involved in.
One example is when Carl says yes to giving a lift to a homeless guy in his car and takes him to practically nowhere and in the process, the homeless guy uses Carl's mobile phone to the point where the battery runs out and Carl's car runs out of petrol after driving for so long for him. He then gives himself a verbal beating about how stupid he was to do such a thing.
Or there is the scene where he has a rather intimate encounter with an elderly lady because he felt pressured into it.
Great stuff!
I wish there were more comedy films like this and less American Pie or Tropic Thunder type movies that beg the audience to laugh at it when it's just not funny. The comedy in those films are too silly and tries too hard.
I'm recommending this one because I believe it's one of the best comedy films in a while after so much rubbish that's come through.
Summary: A genuinely funny film that's one of the best comedy films in years
