Advantages: A Nice Film
Disadvantages: A Little Boring
Well I just reviewed Sleepless in Seattle, so thought it only right that I review this film next. You've got mail was the kind of follow up to the brilliant Sleepless in Seattle. Directed again by Nora Ephron and starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, even though this was a completely different story they were clearly trying to recapture the onsceen magic.
This film was released back in 1998 and was a big hit, but to be honest that was really on the back of the sucess of Sleepless in Seattle. Even though this is a good film it never really got close to it previous film.
The film tells the story of two New York book shop owners. First of all we have Kathleen Kelly played by Meg Ryan. She owns a small book shop that is great on service and a nice friendly place to be. Then comes Joe Fox played by Hanks. He is an owner of a huge book chain, Fox books and is opening a mega store just round the corner from Kathleens little shop. Needless to say this causes the little book shop massive problems.
While all this is going on Kathleen is in a relationship where she is not happy and meets someone online. He emails her most days, hence 'you've got mail'. And the relationship develops. So the story follows that relationship as it progresses and the meet up, with a suprising twist, for Kathleen if not the watchers.
I enjoyed this film, but it really is nothing special. It meanders along at a nice pace but its all fairly obvious whats going to happen. The magic is not quite there for me, and while there are some funny and entertaining bits it really does not get you going like Sleepless did.
Although I am a big fan of both Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan there performances in this just seemed a little flat. It really does not get you involved in the story as it should do, having said that I did still enjoy the film and if you forget about Sleepless its still a decent watch in its own right.
The films runs for 119 minutes, to be honest it did start to drag a little near the end. I think maybe they could just have snipped twenty minutes off it and that would have improved it.
The film is rated as PG. There is nothing really that should offend anyone in this and its one the family can watch together.
The DVD itself is nothing to exciting, it has all the features you owuld expect.
Overall this is a good film, but not a great film. If you have never seen it its a nice easy one to chill out to, but it certainly won't blow you away, its just a nice film.
Summary: A Decent Film But Nothing Special
