Young Frankenstein (DVD) ... 30 October, 2000 at 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: Black & White, PAL / If you were to argue Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein ranks among the top-10 funniest movies of all time, nobody could reasonably dispute the claim. Spoofing classic horror in the way that Brooks' previous film Blazing Saddles sent up classic Westerns, the movie is both a loving tribute and a raucous, irreverent parody of Universal's classic horror films Frankenstein (1931) and Bride of Frankenstein (1935). Filming in glorious black and white, Brooks recreated the Frankenstein laboratory using the equipment from the original Frankenstein (courtesy of designer Kenneth Strickfaden), and this loving attention to physical and stylistic detail creates a solid foundation for non-stop comedy. The story, of course, involves Frederick Frankenstein (Gene Wilder) and his effort to resume experiments in re-animation pioneered by his late father. (He's got some help, since dad left behind a book titled How I Did It.) Assisting him is the hapless hunchback Igor (Marty Feldman) and the buxom but none-too-bright maiden Inga (Teri Garr), and when Frankenstein succeeds in creating his monster (Peter Boyle), the stage is set for an outrageous revision of the Frankenstein legend. With comedy highlights too numerous to mention, Brooks guides his brilliant cast (also including Cloris Leachman, Madeline Kahn, Kenneth Mars and Gene Hackman in a classic cameo role) through scene after scene of inspired hilarity. Indeed, Young Frankenstein is a charmed film, nothing less than a comedy classic, representing the finest work from everyone involved. Not one joke has lost its payoff, and none of the countless gags have lost their zany appeal. From a career that includes some of the best comedies ever made, this is the film for which Mel Brooks will be most fondly remembered. No video library should be without a copy of Young Frankenstein. And just remember--it's pronounced "Fronkensteen". --Jeff Shannon

Premium Review Young Frankenstein (DVD): Theatrical masterpiece (165 words)
by - written on 17/01/09 (Very useful, 6 readings)
Rating:

OK so I have other top comedy movies but this one does have the ultimate combination of ingredients to put it right up there and being a Mel Brooks movie without question it deserves to be. After watching this movie you will never look at these actors and actresses in the same way. Gene Wilder and Marty Feldman are exceptionally funny in this movie, its side splitting. If you are looking for a huge comedy, packed with entertaining scenes, memorable one liners this is it. There is no way you will appreciate everything with just one viewing, I recommend a few to ensure you catch everything. The film is packed with little references to past movies and actors and ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review If You Only Ever See One Mel Brooks Film... (1193 words)

I'll be perfectly honest and say that I'm not the biggest fan of Mel Brooks, the director of this movie. Recent years has seen me sit stony-faced through the likes of "Dracula: Dead and Loving It", "Robin Hood, Men In Tights" and subsequently avoiding anything else new with his name attached. On the other hand I absolutely love Gene Wilder and its fair to say that when Mel gets one of his spoofs right, he gets it very, very right as with "Blazing Saddles" or the excellent "Spaceballs The Movie" (well I liked it, even if reaction seems somewhat divided elsewhere!) to name a few of my own personal favourites. Young ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Young Frankenstein (DVD): Clasic Spoof! (1047 words)

First off, this film is classified as a PG, which should instantly tell you that despite the title of "young Frankenstein", this is not horror gore fest or serious horror movie that is suitable only for adults. THE FILM Directed by the excellent Mel Brooks and produces by Michael Gruskoff, Young Frankenstein holds a cast of members such as Gene Wilder, Marty Feldman, Madeline Kahn, Peter Boyle amongst others and was first released in the UK way back in 1974. Running for the best part of 110 minutes, ?Young Frankenstein? tells the story of Fred Frankenstein (played superbly by gene Wilder) who has somehow been left a castle in ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review It's 'Fronkenstine' not Frankenstein! (794 words)

Young Frankenstein was the film choice of my hubby as he thinks it is so funny and laughs his socks off every time he sees it. I have to say that I was not too keen on watching it as I have seen the beginning several times before and was very out off as it is in black and white and I do personally find black and white films quite boring. The story is about Frederick Frankenstein who is working as a professor at a college when he gets given the details of his Grandfathers will, his grandfather being the original Frankenstein who created the monster. Frederick sets off for Transylvania to go to his Grandfathers castle to discover more. When he ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Young Frankenstein (DVD): The Funniest Horror Movie, Ever! (1694 words)

Mel Brooks as always been one of those filmmakers that when he gets it right he makes a classic (The Producers 1968, Blazing Saddles 1974) but he is also prone to go badly astray from time to time (Robin Hood: Men in Tights 1993, Spaceballs 1987). His humour very much stems from his Jewish American background, quick one liners, clever insights all delivered in a brash ‘in your face’ style. In many ways I’ve always thought of Brooks as a low-brow version of Woody Allen. Although the comparison might not bear too much scrutiny one area in which both Brooks and Allen are alike is in their love and knowledge of classic movies. Both directors throughout ...  Read the complete review
