Advantages: Emily Blunt is just stunningly attractive.
Disadvantages: Not long enough.
It seems the current cinematic interest in the British monarchy continues, with recent titles including; The Queen, Elizabeth, The Duchess and The Other Boleyn Girl. All of which I think hold individual merit and worth, however this particular piece is somewhat different, in that it is mainly a love story. Britain's longest reigning Queen and her prince charming, Albert.
Sticking close to the events of history this film presents a stylish and sensitive approach to the world of royalty. It makes the audience sympathise with what is expected of the sovereign and how they must cope and conduct themselves, at all times, with decorum.
A young and under prepared Queen, Victoria (Emily Blunt) fills rather large shoes quickly and comfortably. The developing young woman blossoms in parallel to the love both her and Albert affectionately discover for each other.
This film will be overlooked by too many and go unnoticed by those hoping for the blood and guts of the period. This is an ambitious film (with a mere 1hr 40mins run time) but with fantastic attention to detail and a strong cast this film actually makes you want more... Like watching Pride and Prejudice and realising half way through that you're a disk short of the full story.
Young Victoria is superbly filmed and directed, the script is faultless and the delivery of the actors thoroughly enjoyable. It's packed with the calm reserve that the British are known for and depicts a young girl and man becoming better people with each other than perhaps they would be without. If you feel tempted to watch this film but think you'll never get round to it because the new Hollywood big budget American military showcase has just premiered and you can't live without seeing another one of those, then just stop for a second and ask yourself - What do you really know about Britain's longest reigning Queen who changed the face of the nation, gave rise to educational reform re-evaluated the benefit system and gave special welfare to workers, oh and still had time and love enough to have nine children...?
This film makes for an all round wholesome royal experience...if you don't watch it now it will be lost to the realms of DVD limbo, i.e. the dumping ground at the back of your sofa.
Summary: This film is calm, refreshing and wonderful.
