Advantages: acting

Disadvantages: limited plot

I have to admit that I'm not the greatest fan of costume dramas, although I have seen a fair few in my time! The one I saw before the Young Victoria was 'The Other Boleyn Girl' which I found most disappointing, but I'd heard good things and the romantic story appealed to me so I thought I'd give this film a go.

Plot: The plot focused on the relationship between Albert and Victoria and there was plenty of romance in there, which pleased me! Victoria is the most interesting of royalty, in my opinion, so there was a good basis for a good story and on the whole, this was delivered. However, there were some historical inaccuracies and I found the story fairly limited in that it only focused on her very early years.

Acting: Generally, I found this film very well acted. I like Emily Blunt as I think she comes across in interviews as very down to earth, but I feel she has been underused in previous films. However, she really shines here in playing the queen and portrays hers strength very well. The film also has a strong supporting cast: Jim Broadbent and Paul Bettany playing their respective roles very well.

Ultimately, I felt a little dissatisfied as the plot is fairly limited and so there is a lot of 'filler' but overall a good film.

Summary: 3/5
