Fun but could have been more fun! (Zombie Strippers (DVD))

Grindhouse throwbacks are a dime a dozen these days, and they're often very contrived and self conscious efforts that seem very smarmy and even a little pretentious. Zombie Strippers is a middle of the road film that's got some good chuckles and sight gags, but isn't exactly a Grindhouse throwback laugh riot either.

Zombie Strippers begins with a news montage set in a dystopic near-future where George Bush has been elected to a ridiculous fourth term, and has disbanded the United States Congress, banned public nudity nation-wide, and is in numerous wars with numerous different countries. To combat the short supply of soldiers, the government developed a virus to re-animate dead soldiers for "recycling" during battle. However, the virus has broken containment and an infected marine ends up in an alley outside a strip club named Rhino. Soon enough, all Hell breaks loose, resulting in a bunch of, yes, you've guessed it, Zombie Strippers.

Sounds good? In principle, yes, this could be a kitschy ride, but it takes far too long to get going, intent to introduce us to characters that it clearly thinks are actually worth paying attention to, when, of course, they're not, and anyone watching this surely just wants to cut to the chase and see some naked zombies.

It certainly takes a while to get going with its concept, but once it does, this is a thoroughly enjoyable piece of schlock entertainment that delivers fully on the expectations of its title. B-movie fun at its best.
