Zombieland is a zombie comedy film.
Zombieland is first, and foremost a comedy. The catch? It's centred around zombies, which are, traditionally, a horror element. Combining these two genres was a great thing for the film-makers to do, and it's been combined almost perfectly. It's one of the only zombie films I could imagine laughing at with the filmmakers intention.
The film follows a teenage college student, with a love for World of Warcraft, whose only girlfriend attempted to eat him following the onset of the zombie virus. There is also a twinkie-obsessed zombie killing maniac who's only love was for his 'puppy', whom he lost during the zombie onset. As well as two girls, both related and devilishly smart, who attempt to manipulate the boys all the way through the film with their smart ploys and well thought ideas. The characters are likeable, believable and well acted.
The Special Effects in this movie are great as well, from zombie slaughtering to a fairground brought to life and some generally spooky scares as well as great presentation of the 'rules' the main character puts to surviving in 'Zombieland'. In addition, all of the stunts are believably performed and they look real enough to cringe upon impact and go 'Ouch', before laughing at the comic nature of the kill.
It's hard to compare Zombieland to other such films, because the market severely lacks them. The last zombie comedy film that I remember watching was 'Shaun of the Dead', and 'Zombieland' is on par that film in it's laughter, scares and enjoyability.
The soundtrack wasn't really noticed by me, mostly because it went along with the movie so well. In films where the Soundtrack is so blatantly out of place it's laughable, you notice. However, the fact that I didn't pay attention to the Soundtrack in this movie shows that it is suited to the movie and the moments that it is placed in, and therefore I believe that soundtrack was fantastic.
I cannot compare it to other films with the same director as I have not yet seen another film by the same director, therefore any opinion I may have would be irrelevant.
The Value for Money is good, I certainly enjoyed watching it the second time after seeing it at the cinema, so I'd say that it's good for your money and I'd recommend that you buy it.
I am reviewing only the Film, and not the Special Features or included bonuses that come with the DVD.
In conclusion, Zombieland is an outstanding film packed with laughs, horror and towards the end, an overpowering feeling of happiness towards the unity of the characters with a terrifically heartwarming end. Apart from the fact that they're all zombies now. I'd happily recommend Zombieland to any of my friends that were interested in watching a generally funny movie about the clobbering of zombies and friendship.
Summary: A must-see for zombie lovers and obscure comedy fanatics.
