I knew nothing about the film 'Zoolander' other than that it was a comedy starring Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson. As a fan of this comic pair I knew the second I saw it in the bargain bucket at my local supermarket that it was a must see for these steadily darkening, rainy evenings.
The film follows quite a basic storyline- there is no need for any deep concentration, which is exactly what I wanted when I put the film on. Ben Stiller's character has won a best male model competition for several years running and assumes that this year will be no different. However, he is beaten in the contest by Owen Wilson's character, and the story continues from there, following there initial rivalry and subsequently there friendship.
The storyline has no particular substance to it, and to be honest, I don't think the film would have been half as enjoyable with different lead characters, but this pair of actors, as usual, do not disappoint. The film is full of their tongue in cheek, innocent humour and their happy carefree attitude brings a smile to my face. Simply watching them in their roles as models, over-exaggerating their posing faces was hilarious. They have great chemistry together and were a joy to watch regardless of a slightly weak storyline.
The film is rated as a '12' but I had no problem at all letting my 10 year old daughter watch it. There is just one sexual reference, but I think it could quite easily go unnoticed by innocent minds! The language is tame and there is no violence to speak of so it is reasonably child friendly - it's just that I think the film may struggle to keep the interest of a child.
I bought it for £2.99 as it's several years old now, but I wouldn't be willing to pay much more for it. It's good value for us as my daughter is a bit of a film addict and watches them all in circulation, so it will be watched a few times.
Zoolander is extremely light-hearted and not to be taken seriously on any level, so for anyone after a thought-provoking film I certainly don't advise this one. If, however, you are a after a film to giggle along to and pass on a couple of hours then it's great.
As mentioned, if it wasn't a Ben Stiller&Owen Wilson film I think it would struggle, and to anyone who doesn't like the pair I would certainly avoid this film, but otherwise it's a cheerful, light-hearted watch.
Summary: Great for ben stiller and owen wilson fans
