Advantages: Easy to use, good range of features, high quality processing
Disadvantages: Multitrack view is a bit limited
Adobe Audition is a great advance for audio editing.
When I was a student studying for a National Diploma in Music Technology, we were introduced to this software. I had never used or even heard of it before then. Like most things at first, everyone did get a bit panicy about whether they would be able to learn it, especially as it was known to have such a vast range of things accessible to it.
This was not a problem at all! The software itself is very simple to use. You can simply copy and paste a peice of audio into the screen, or simply open up a peice of audio via 'File..Open..'. The software has great capabilities of zooming in very closey to the audio. This can help any seperate tracks that may be causing problems to a mix for a sound engineer. There are good noise free applications, such as the basic Normalising, Amplifying, Equalising and general filtering as well as many more advanced processes.
As well as having the basics, each basic then goes into more advanced areas which can be programmed personally for own taste, or by using many presets for quickness.
I personally use it for sorting out any seperate tracks that I have recorded before starting to mix them for the final peice. There is a great noise reduction tool, which ofcourse reduces the background noise that may have been picked up during the recording.
There is also a multitrack view for each of your tracks you open in Audition. However I do not use this as it can be quite limited for multitracking. I tend to use Steinbergs Cubase for my mixing. However, once I have mixed the tracks, the final mix I will open in Audition again for the mastering. There are great presets, which I personally use then tweak myself to get me started. Also, with the new feature being a 'Mastering Rack' you can set up a chain of different processes for your song. The good thing with this is you can keep it stored so when mastering an album, all tracks can be mastered similar so songs dont differ too much when played. This is a very good little feature.
A great peice of software for either editing loops, tracks, removing vocals from tracks, and even mastering! Definately a good buy for anyone within the music industry.
Summary: For the musician, engineer or producer, its a great peice of software to add to your toolkit!
