Cubase started as a MIDI recording and editing tool. Later, features for recording raw audio were introduced. Cubase was originally written for the Atari ST, and has since been ported to Apple Macintosh and Microsoft Windows.
Cubase has changed somewhat over the years as have the computer operating systems hosting it. - initally Cubase, which featured only MIDI, and which was available on the Atari, Macintosh and Windows. Then Cubase VST which boasted fully integrated audio recording, real time playback and track mixing. VST stands for Virtual Studio Technology, a standard for audio plug-ins which has led to a plethora of third-party effects, both freeware and commercial. This was the start of The digital era of recording and opened the doors for many aspiring home recordists. By this time cubase was soley being used on PCs and Apple mac fomats, the atari had long retired.
Cubase SX was introduced, which dramatically altered the way the program ran, and featured a steep learning curve to older Cubase users. However, once the new methods of working are learned, the improvements in handling of audio and automation make for a truly professional sequencer and audio editor.
Cubase is a must have for any home recording enthusiasts, its not to hard to learn and its a damn site cheaper than learning it in a studio thats for sure, its great fun and packed with very useful and musical plugins and vst instruments. A great little box of tricks for all you Phil spectors in the making! Buy it you wont regret it.
