Ikea kitchen planning tool
Advantages: Works well, very clear to use, full price and pick list included
Disadvantages: Needs a moderate to fast PC, some technical know how
I cannot praise the IKEA kitchen planning tool enough. When my mum's kitchen was destroyed following a serious leak, she was visited by an independent kitchen planner, who made a huge fuss of designing her a 'bespoke kitchen' (aren't they all) and pricing it up at over £9,000. For our new home, we decided to design the kitchen ourselves and after trying a few online kitchen planners found the IKEA one to be the best.
Setting up an account is free to do with your email address and you can save your design and work on it later - crucially you can also then access it from an IKEA store where a kitchen planner will check over your plan, make suggestions, and advise you on possible better ways to do things (ours showed us how to better utilise a corner space with a carousel cupboard).
You can set your room display using the measurements you have and it will create a to the millimetre plan of your kitchen (as purchased from IKEA, of course). You can do this in a 2D (overhead) or 3D layout. Wire frames of the units can be rotated and fitted and then changed to your desired finish, colour, and even the handles can be changed. You can 'paint' the walls, add lighting, and all of your appliances. It's so easy to use, though you do need a decent computer otherwise it can lag a bit.
The final view of the kitchen is very realistic and reassuring and makes you want to go out and buy it - after it's been checked by IKEA, you can print it out in store and this will give you a full itinerary of everything you need right down to the final price which is brilliant for budgeting. We got ours all planned out including some high end appliances for £2,090 which is excellent. We also feel like we had a direct hand in designing the kitchen ourselves which is great. Overall I cannot recommend the IKEA kitchen planning tool enough; it does so much and it actually does more than some bespoke kitchen designers do (for example, the ones that visited my mother omitted all electrical appliances, just leaving a space in the plan which means the 3D view wasn't very realistic looking). Yes you do need a bit of technical know how but if you don't have it, you can plan it instore with an IKEA kitchen planner and they are very good at their job. As a tool however this is hands down the best we have used.
I didn't expect a warehouse type store such as IKEA to have such an interactive tool for kitchen planning but after trying a few can highly recommend this one whether you plan to buy all your components from IKEA or not (we went for the lot, as the appliances are made by whirlpool anyway and they were running a promotion).
If you are changing your kitchen I wouldn't use any other tool.
