Advantages: Helps me to remember things the grey cells forget.

Disadvantages: A very basic program though I like it like that.

3M are clever people. They developed the Post-It notes that people cottoned onto, and these useful notes can be stuck anywhere as a reminder to the user of something they need to do. Canary yellow is the traditional colour of these notes which stick with a very non invasive pasted strip, and then when the task that you have reminded yourself of is accomplished, they tear up and throw away. I have been using them for years.

Then one day I thought what if they were to invent a similar thing in software, so that these little virtual notes to yourself could be brought up on the screen in a similar manner and even enhanced perhaps with the use of an alarm, set to a date and time, or even so that you can get reminders on a regular basis. Well, 3M got there before me, and developed a program that is downloadable from Download.com which is called Post-It Software Notes Lite. It's a free program, and yes there are options to buy a more complex system, but to me and many users like me, the free version does a darned good job, and there is no need to shell out money to have the system installed onto your computer.

The full size of the program is as the makers suggest, i.e. “Lite” at 1.85MB. It doesn't take up an enormous amount of space and is very fast to download.

Once the program has downloaded, you can make adjustments to suit yourself, changing the sounds of the program, or even adding voice, although I prefer the simplicity of the sounds that are already loaded into the system. You have a post-it pad that follows you wherever you go, i.e. Even when working with Word for example, the post-it note pad sits discreetly at the top of the screen ready for use whenever you think of something you may need reminding of. Even whilst you are surfing the net, the comforting little pad sits on the screen, can be re-sized to suit you, although I find that the size of the original pad suits me best, small and discreet.

When you want to add a reminder, all you need to do is click on the post it pad and a new note appears. It says in the Dooyoo description that it is sufficient for your curser to pass over the pad, although this is incorrect. Here you get the opportunity to type in the information that you want to be reminded of, and a choice of options such as alarm dates and times, and it really is a doddle to use. The nice thing about the program is that as soon as a note has served its purpose, you right click and “trash” the note. The other inaccuracy in the Dooyoo description is that you do not have the option of different fonts in the post it note lite version, though this really is not a bother to me, since I want to use it for reminders, and the importance of a choice of fonts is of no consequence to me.

Advantages

1.No more paper to get rid of, no searching for a pen.
2.Easy to use without any kind of adjustment.
3.Setting alarm is easy, and you choose to be reminded on a specific date, repeated at intervals if you wish, or at certain times, putting you in control.
4.Noises are not invasive ones or likely to scare you.
5.It's free and it doesn't come much better than that.
6.Takes very little space.

Disadvantages

1.It slows down start up time by a few seconds, although this disadvantage is outweighed by the advantages very easily, and if you really are fussy about start up time, you can take it out of start up items, although I prefer to have it there, ready for when I need to jot down a reminder.

2. There are no updates available in the lite version although I cannot think of anything more that I would want to make the program more useful to me.

This is a good little program, and one I use on a regular basis. You don't need to use the alarm sound which sounds like an old fashioned clock because a little icon appears with an alarm clock on it, and even when sound is turned off, you are reminded and your eye is drawn to the icon, because the little red clock moves. It's a super addition to my computer experience and could be to yours too.

Suited to all versions of Windows from 98 onwards.
