I've been a Sky customer from virtually when they started, apart from a brief foray into on-digital, so when I saw their new broadband package See Surf Talk I thought this could be the one for me as I'd been looking into making the jump from dial-up into broadband, I thought I could keep everything in one place and finally ditch BT, this would also have the advantage of actually saving me a bit of cash too.
I went onto Sky's website and went through the process of testing my line and was told yes my line would support the broadband package I wanted, I then registered my interest as Sky had said the service would not be rolled out for a couple of months, no problem, or so I thought. I had a confirmation e-mail from them saying yes they had registered me and I would get an e-mail or letter from them in due course. After about three months I got the letter to my amazement it said I could not have the package I wanted as it was not available in my area but I could have another, this turned out to be, surprise surprise, the most expensive one they did. Of course I would still have to pay the full whack for my current subscription but I could have Sky talk for only a fiver more a month. I then rang them up and asked them if the package I wanted would ever be available in my area they said yes but not until July 2007, or thereabouts. I waited until April, after receiving about ten letters from them inviting me to register my inerest, and then rang them again I was then told by the operator that the See Surf Talk would never be available where I live when I asked where it would be I was told that as far as they knew it was only available in one telephone code area and that was in Scotland, they then said I could have the other broadband deal which would cost me about £30.00 a month, and also I could have Sky talk. I then asked if it would ever arrive in my area and was told no. I left it a couple of days and phoned Sky again. They replied that the reason I could not have the package I wanted was that my phone line would not support it and that Sky talk was not available in my area, when I said that some of my friends had Sky talk they declined to answer, when I said that the package they offered me was faster than the one I wanted yet my line could take this they again declined to answer. I even made a complaint to the Advertising Standards Agency about the blanket advertising on TV and in the post about a service, that, in the words of a Sky representative would probably never arrive in most areas, they could not uphold my complaint as Sky had stated on leaflets, mail drops and on the TV adverts that this service was not available in all areas albeit in very very tiny small print. I am thoroughly sick of Sky I have dumped most of my package so I only pay them the bare minimum and this is only so my grandchildren can see what they want to see when they visit, if I thought I would get away with it I would dump the lot. With the money I have saved I was able to take out a broadband subscription with Tesco where I get 2mbps and a 3gb download cap, plenty for me, better customer service, so far, and clubcard points too.
Summary: I wouldn't bother with Sky See Surf Talk if I were you.
