Advantages: Good layout, easy to use

Disadvantages: Annoying beatmatch controls, generes are not "genius"

I have been a frequent user of itunes for over 4 years now and my experience with the software has been unanimously positive so far but there are a couple issues with it that I have noticed. The crossfading of songs in iTunes for instance can be set to crossfade within 4 seconds and whilst it doesn't beatmatch it brings the songs in at the same volume.

The last song is half volume, the next song is half volume. Any DJ knows that two songs that aren't beatmatched should never be crossfaded at the same volume. I personally crossfade the last track at around quarter volume, the next should be around 3 quarters when it comes in. There are also problems with iTunes suggested genres which somehow seems to think MJ Cole is punk rock (it simply isn't, youtube search it) and that the mission impossible theme tune is dance...

The software is very easy to set up and use though with instillation taking just a few minutes on a PC and mac users you've go it covered from when you get it out the box. The software is simple and easy to navigate with handy menu's down the side which display playlists and area's which your music can be stored.

One thing I have to commend apple on though is their excellent stats bar at the bottom of pretty much everything. iDevices like an iPad will have their usage (storage) stats displayed and a breakdown of what is causing such a jam in your hard drive like apps and photo's. In the music pages of iTunes you can find all the time and storage stats. This includes the number of days it would take to listen to all your music, the number of tracks you have and the total disk space your collection is using.

The software is quite fast on my Mac but slow on my PC and I find that running multiple windows like firefox and other internet heavy programs will slow it down, especially when retrieving song info. This is also true of a full iTunes library where iTunes simply gets clogged up and can't cope anymore. This happens to me on a regular basis but you need a very serious library for this to happen.

Itunes has a fantastic help guide which tells you almost everything you need to know about itunes including the technical details. There are a few buttons I needed to look up on the internet though to find out what they do but the Apple website was more than enough to help me.

Overall a fantastic piece of software don't get me wrong but i'd still rather hand sort my files into genre's or better yet, get the free Pioneer DJ software Rekordbox.

Summary: Alright for a few songs here and there but DJ's with terabytes of music, get rekordbox.
