AccademiaNewest Review: ... painted in the 1490s. Personally, my highlight is the work of Canaletto, who only joined the Accademia in 1763, and several of his paintings are on display. The galleries are very spacious, and it is easy to look around them at your own speed. The main problem with it is that since there is so much art on display, and the art is all of a very similar style, it's very easy to accelerate as you go round, and not spend enough time appreciating the art on display. The Gallerie dell'Accademia boasts the largest collection of Venetian art anywhere in the world, and what better location could there be for it than in the Dorsoduro region of Venice, just on the South side of the Accademia bridge over the Grand Canal. The collection was founded in 1750, and moved to its present location (in three former religious buildings) by Napoleon in 1807. Napoleon expanded the collection by adding works of art from the churches and monasteries that he occupied.
