To be an independent tourist in any of the former Soviet Republics takes grit and determination. Don't get me wrong, foreign tourists are welcomed with open arms - after all they represent much needed income - but only if they have the decency to turn up with a tour group and their own interpreter. Even in the famous city of Yalta on the Crimean Peninsula (now in Ukraine) independent travellers still present a headache for people in any kind of tourist attraction. Even Russian holiday makers on vacation in the Crimea would visit attractions such as Anton Chekhov's House only as part of an organised tour. The Lonely Planet gives vague directions on ...
