Egyptian MuseumNewest Review: ... it is completed as it is near the ring road. My main reason for visiting the museum was to see the Tutankhamen's exhibition. In 1972 when I was a child I remember that an exhibition was brought to London and staged in the British Museum there were lots of photos in the papers and so much publicity about it. I begged my father to take me to see it but alas it was not to be. The queues to ... more |

The Egyptian Museum Cairo. We visited the Museum in Cairo one afternoon and in fact you could probably spend not only a couple of days here a lifetime would not be long enough as there is so much to see. The museum is housed in a building of great halls built by the French in 1908. In total there are 107 halls and it would be impossible to see all of the items in a couple of hours. There is a special exhibition of the mummies in a side hall for which there is a separate charge of 40 L on top of the 20L for normal entry. Normal opening times are between 09:00 and 19:00 but you should check locally for opening times. There are souvenir shops, toilets, a ... Read the complete review

The Egyptian Museum is located in the heart of downtown Cairo. As such, its surroundings are pretty polluted and traffic-ridden. Apparently this is having a seriously detrimental effect on the artifacts, so that a bigger modern museum better able to withstand the Cairo smog is apparently planned for the outskirts of Cairo near the pyramids - but don't hold your breath. I was told it would be at least 10 years and could be much longer. It's a shame the museum is suffering so, because what's inside is truly spectactular. You could literally spend days in there without getting bored. Sadly I only had a couple of hours so I'm sure I just skimmed the ... Read the complete review

The Egyptian museum is without doubt a must see experience if you are visiting Cairo. The museum houses the finest collection of Egyptian antiquites in the world and is the permanent home to the Tutankhamun collection. The basic entry ticket (around £3) allows access to all areas of the museum except the royal mummies room, for which there is an additional fee. Contrary to what is written in most travel guide books NO cameras are permitted into the museum (they stopped selling camera permits around 2004) so don't bring one!. Security checks take place both at the main entrance to the grounds and as you enter the museum. If you have a camera, you ... Read the complete review

The treasures of ancient Egypt are some of the most sought after in the world. This museum houses what is arguably the best collection of ancient artefacts. The museum is divided into several rooms on two floors, from the outside the museum looks quite small, I was expecting it to look bigger, but it is deceptively large inside. The museum is a kind of rusty colour on the outside and looks quite old. The main reason that this museum is so famous is that it houses the majority of the finds from King Tutankhamen's tomb that was discovered by Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon in 1922 after decades of searching. It is the only tomb found intact to this ... Read the complete review

We went to the Egyptian Museum as part of a tour, but to be honest, we deliberately lost the tour party because I think that with this kind of place you need to wander at will and just see what interests you. A decent guide book (the Rough Guide) or something from the Museum itself will give you enough information. I would recommend the Mummy room, for which you need to pay extra, purely because the mummies are incredibly well-preserved and absolutely fascinating. Also, the guards in this room let us take pictures, even though it is forbidden (bribery really does grease the wheels in Egypt, let me tell you). There is a huge crowd around the Golden face ...
