Berlin's "Museum for the Present", as it somewhat pretentiously calls itself, is housed in a former railway station to the North of the city. Constructed in 1846, the building stood vacant after receiving considerable damage in the Second World War. In 1996, following extensive reconstruction, the building was finally opened as the Hamburger Bahnhof gallery. The first thing that you notice upon arriving at the museum is the late Dan Flavin's external installation of blue fluorescent neon tubes positioned between windows around the outside of the white-washed building, giving the museum a startling appearance.
