Advantages: Specialist , Interesting

Disadvantages: Too small

The Esperanto Museum is part of the Hofbutg complex in the city centre. It's a great little place, solely dedicated to the man made language of Esperanto.

The admission fee is low - only 2 pounds for students, and I think it was mayve 3 or 4 pounds for everyone else. This includes some info leaflets on the language and on the museum itself.

When I arrived, the lady on duty asked what my mother tongue was. When I told her, she said she could only speak very little English, and then went on to chat almost fluently. We watched a DVD on the history of the language and its creator, including the reasons behind certain grammatical rules. This was offered in either German or Esperanto. Although I understood most of the German, she also stopped it every 5 mins or so and explained in wonderful English what had just been said.

After, she showed me the books and tapes for sale, and then left me to look at the exibits. There are papers and photos and books and maps on display, and most have English "Subtitles" to aid understanding.

There's a great map on one wall which shows places all over the world where you can stay over night for free if you are a member of the Esperanto world organisation - pretty cool!

Although it's small, i would recommend this museum to any linguistics students, and any one else with a vested interest in language.

Very good information. I speak some Esperanto and think more should do so. Will visit this place on my next visit to Vienna.
