Advantages: Fantastic museum wiyhout the crowds of Dublin's other attractions.

Disadvantages: You could end up with a hangover by lunchtime!

Think of Dublin and we all think Guiness and a tour of the world famous brewery is a must on anyone's itinery, but just across the Liffey and a mere 10 to 15 minutes walk from the bustling lanes of Temple Bar is the fantastic Old Jameson's Distillery Museum. (It is not now a working distillery as this has moved to Cork) What is left is a well maintained and hospitable museum with many features of the old working distillery still intact.)

The museum is situated on Bow Street and can be located on any tourist map which are easily picked up around the city. Outside the museum entrance is a quaint courtyard with a bistro pavement type cafe opposite. However, unlike the more popular attractions it was not uncomfortably busy (we were there in August) and the regular tours were not packed to rafters. Whilst waiting for the tour to begin, visitors can browse the well stocked gift shop with a good quality range of products or sample a tasty Irish Coffee, we did both.

The tour begins with a short film show based on the founder of the distillery John Jameson (a Scotsman) who felt that by triple distilling Whiskey it was twice as smooth as the twice distilled whisky he was familiar with in Scotland.

Following this a well guided 40 minute tour of the museum lets every visitor experience the full history of the building and imagine it in its working heyday.

However, the best is last, volunteer at the beginning of the tour and you will be a taste tester sampling 4 or 5 different whiskeys and actually feeling that extra smoothness that Jameson's offers. However, everyone gets a decent sized complimentary drink anyway. And all this before 1 o'clock on a Tuesday afternoon.

Summary: Hospitable, informative and satisfying, with a drink included!

Interesting - we're in Dublin again in October and haven't been to this place before.
