Advantages: Some must see bits of work

Disadvantages: Oppresive and not for me

I have always felt a bit guilty that on my previous visits to Paris I have never visited the Louvre, this time as we were in Paris over a weekend we decided to visit on the Sunday as it is free entry, this does mean that it is very busy but given that we wanted to see the main exhibits only we knew it would be crowded anyway.

If you wanted to see everything in the Louvre then you would need a few days as it has a 400 metre frontage along the Seine and it is huge in cale, the entry is very impresive with the glass pyramid pushing is tip through the concrete square outside and providing an impressive very light effect in the main concourse which has book shops and coffee bars in adundance. One tip is that if the queues are long at this entrance head off for the lesser known entrances and you will beat the queues, once in the Louvre there are three main wings all of which converge onto the main concourse.

There are plenty of free maps however if you are just after seeing the Mona Lisa and the Venus De Milo then you can probably just follow the crowds although both are well sign posted, the Mona Lisa is housed in its own room and is dwarfed by the sheer size of the viewing area which is always packed with visitors.

To be honest visiting the Louvre I soon got art fatigue, I pefer my art to be a bit more modern and interactive and while I can appreciate great works of art I also bore of effectively seeing similar images or themes so for me our visit to the Louvre was a mere ninety minutes and after that I was desperate for some open spaces without th shuffling crowds and photo dodging that I had had to endure. Sorry Paris but this is one attraction I will not return to.

Summary: Famous art museum

Have been meaning to go there myself - good tip about the lesser known entrances. I'm a bit like you - I go to an Art Gallery and say...yep...yep....yep... . yep...oh who did that one?...yea.... yea....urgh....nah...next !! I think when you have hundreds of the buggers it all gets a bit 'sameish'. There's only a few that really stand out - and they're not always the really famous ones :-)

I loved the Louvre, disappointed by the Mona Lisa though, seemed to me like it was pretty much the dullest painting in the whole place. What do I know though!
