The Museum of Archaeology in Heraklion, Crete is purportedly the second most important in Greece, matched for its collection of antiquities only by the recently updated National Museum of Greece in Athens. This one, let us be clear from the outset, is still a work in progress. The renovations / move into a new building were scheduled to take place in 2009, but when I was there last month (in June) the - admittedly in parts very impressive collection - was still housed in temporary accommodation.
