I read in some guide book that there are more museums and galleries in Florence than in the whole of Spain. Useless trivia such as that has a terrible habit of sticking in my head, but of all the galleries and museums in this gem of a city, the Uffizi (meaning offices in Italian) is the most famous. Located between the Piazza della Signorina and the Arno, it is a testament to the Italian Renaissance which centred in the city of Florence, under the auspices of the de Medici's. Originally, it was the building which housed the offices (hence the name!) of the adminstrative districts of Florence. It is said to be one of the oldest galleries/museums ...
