The Bargello concentrates on sculpture, containing many priceless works of art created by such sculptors as Donatello, Giambologna, and Michelangelo. The Accademia dell'Arte del Disegno (often simply called the Accademia) collection's highlights are Michelangelo's David and his unfinished Slaves. Across the Arno is the huge Pitti Palace lavishly decorated with the Medici family's former private collection. The art gallery contained a large number of Renaissance works, including several by Raphael. Adjoining the Palace are the Boboli Gardens, elaborately landscaped and with many interesting sculptures.

It is a collection which definitely concentrates on quality rather than quantity, and is certainly not as large as I expected it to be.. this is not a 'Louvre' type experience which you could spend a whole day in (if you really wanted to!). I read in some guide book that there are more museums and galleries in Florence than in the whole of Spain. Useless trivia such as that has a terrible habit of sticking in my head, but of all the galleries and museums in this gem of a city, the Uffizi (meaning offices in Italian) is the most famous. Located between the Piazza della Signorina and the Arno, it is a testament to the Italian Renaissance which centred in the city of Florence, under the auspices of the de Medici's. Originally, it was the building which housed the offices (hence the name!) of the adminstrative districts of Florence.
