Museums & Art Galleries in New York in general

New York is a deeply enthralling iconic city, a whirling maelstrom of diverse cultures and experiences. Much of the experience for a first-time visitor is to walk around the vibrant neighbourhoods, gawp at the architecture, fill your belly with just about anything cooked in any style you can think of and drink whatever you want in any sort of company. In addition to these sensual experiences I would also add shopping of course and a visit to the theatre, cinema, sporting event such as baseball AND at least one of the museums. OK, there are some pretty good museums in New York, but, nice though Americans are, they do have an unfortunate habit of claiming that they do everything best. On a recent trip to New York, we visited several of the major museums, such as the Metropolitan, the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), and the Guggenheim, and although they were good, they really were no better than their equivalents in Amsterdam, Paris and London. Don't believe all the hype. These are good museums, sure, but they're not that good.
