There are numerous museums and galleries within St Petersburg but none can be compared to the Hermitage Museum. It is one of the biggest and best museums I have ever seen. In fact even if you spend a week here you won't see everything so vast is the collection of exhibits. My advice is to prioritise what you want to see and try not to deviate until you have completed your list. Otherwise you will end up missing half of the things you were desperate to see. Read up on what you want to see before you go in. You can't afford to waste valuable time reading guides while you are there. After all there are approximately two and a half million items on display ...
