Every Slovenian town worth its salt has a castle (in Slovene a "grad") and Slovenska Bistrica's is one of the best. The castle is very much in the central European style and therefore looks more like a baroque mansion than a fortress. The town is surrounded by villages that nestle in the foothills of the Pohorje Massif and the castle is in the heart of the town rather than occupying a strategically defensive position from which to repel invaders. It is partly the seeming innocuous location that makes this castle seem less "castle-like". When the Germans controlled the town, Slovenian people weren't allowed to live inside its boundaries ...
