We indicated that we did not mind but this is not how things are done in Soviet Museums where you must be escorted around the whole museum at a pace chosen by the usher. In 1991 when Georgia declared independence from the Soviet Union, thousands of Georgians flooded the streets to tear down statues that symbolized the long reign of the Russian Communists over the country. Only in one city did the opposite happen; the people of Gori, an hour north of the capital Tbilisi fought valiantly to save their statue of Stalin, the city's most famous son. The statue still stands today, not far from a museum dedicated to the life of the brutal Soviet leader.
