Advantages: Superb collections, free entry

Disadvantages: can be crowded

The British Museum is a fantastic place in which you can spend hours on end, and still need to come back again to look some more. The sheer variety of the exhibits means that whatever civilisation you want to learn about, you will find stuff that is of interest.
Most of the exhibits are actually very good (this is in contrast with, for example, the Louvre Antiquities sections where there is a mix of good and not so good stuff) and the displays are well organised and have decent explanations of what the objects actually are.
The museum is free to all visitors (although you are encouraged to donate what you can). This is excellent as it means that you can pop in whenever you feel like it if you are in the area.
If you are in London, make time to go there, it really is worth it, even if you don't think that you are interested in history.
