Advantages: Fun, playful, different

Disadvantages: Expensive, few demonstrations, oversimplified

The first thing I noted about Cadbury World was that it was overpriced at £13.45 per adult (probably due to Cadbury's becoming a more commercialised company over time - I'm sure it wasn't this expensive when I went as a kid). However, in conjunction with a rail ticket from Midland Rail, up to six people can get 30% off. A further advantage of this offer is smelling the chocolate as you pass the windows round the back of the factory, the rather un-scenic route taken to get between Bourneville station and the attraction.

Free chocolate bars abound on your entry to each section (a dairy milk, caramel, buttons, curly whirly - plus an extra one if you ask nicely - per person). The information provided about the origins of chocolate etc. is basic and aimed more at children, the history of the company and how chocolate is made is interesting, and the ride is silly but fun. I was disappointed at the lack of demonstrations and inability to see actual chocolate in the factory section, but perhaps my senses had been dulled by seeing copious amounts of edible treats in Willy Wonka's factory in the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory films. There was also a large amount of repetition in the information given. The "essence" section was good, allowing you to eat a very small cupful (which tastes like a sickeningly large cupful) of melted chocolate + an extra goodie of your choice (in my case, jelly babies). The shops had some good things to offer but were overpriced, and the same can be said for the cafe.

This museum is recommended for children, or adults with their child-like amazement headset screwed in, as I did. I enjoyed myself. I would suggest avoiding June/July visits, as many school trips make the queues quite long.

Summary: Worth going by train, especially for kids.
