The 1940s House Exhibition and a Topical Discovery (Imperial War Museum (London))
Advantages: Topical, Well funded, Innovative Disadvantages: Huge - need two days or more!, Disturbing in parts
To my delight the 1940's house exhibition has been extended until January 2001- I thought having missed it in August that I would just have to make do with repeats on TV. This was not just a few museum exhibits - the whole house has been rebuilt in a large studio area of the museum. you walk through the entire house which is complete with an upstairs and back garden with realistic night time lighting. the house is as you saw it on the show but being there feels partly familiar like being at your grandad's house and also cosier than you might imagine. It doesn't seem such an alien environment. It is very thought provoking. Equally so were the exhibitions which included - The Gulf War, the Victoria Cross Exhibition, and some real life nuclear bombs and public safety films about saving yourself in a nuclear attack. With recent events it is a real eye opener - and scarily topical. The restaurant was doing special offers of very substantial meals for £3-4 which was lucky as we had to stay all day to see 3/4 of the entire musuem. The best value and most socially relevant musuem I have ever visited. Summary: |
