GillMN Creetown Gem and Rock Museum: ... Gem and Rock museum is hidden away in Creetown, Galloway, in the South West of Scotland. It is one of the largest privately owned collection of rocks and minerals in the UK! It is also one of my favourite museums of all time. I have been visiting this gem of a gemstone museum for about 25 years. Everytime I go up to Galloway in fact. I brainwashed my children into wanting to see it and we just kept going b...

Penny_Wise The Burrell Collection
... ve lost count of the number of times I ve enjoyed a visit to the Burrell Collection. I love that it s so close to the noisy bustling city of Glasgow, yet in a peaceful and leafy rural setting. The quality of the exhibitions, fine art and displays is world-class and changes with some regularity featuring well-known names in the art world such as Manet and Rodin. It is free to enter the Burrell Collection Museum, but donations are gently encouraged and help to keep the place going. There is also a small gift shop at the entrance which I always enjoy browsing. It is stocked with wee knick-knacks that make useful and cheap souvenirs for the children to take home, and also...

... for children. Following on from here we enter Creatures from the Past. This is a wonderful exhibit containing a dinosaur skeleton and various fossils as well as models of extinct animals from prehistoric times. Again this area is popular with families - all children love dinosaurs don t they? Here we also find an area dedicated to Scotland s lost wildlife. It contains information on animals which are now extinct in Scotland, with some fur and other things for visitors to touch. It s actually quite a quiet little area; generally people feel a little sadness at the loss of such beautiful creatures. The Ancient Egypt exhibit is, once again, very popular with families...

... m visiting from the states and the most exciting part our child had while visiting this exhibition was the train ride there when a train was passing in the opposite direction. Not been to a single science exhibit of this stature in the UK or the US that fails to capture the imagination as this one does. Not only are their typos on their displays, they can t even locate Yellowstone park correctly on their earthquake map. It s not just the small things the mismatching of the video screens, particularly in the polar section, is really off-putting and maybe they want you to sit in case you get motion sickness and fall over? It s dull, I don t mean the topic but the whol...
