Advantages: Easily accessable introduction to modern art
Disadvantages: Won't ever be the cutting edge.
Everyone agrees that the Tate Modern is a bold step forward for contemporary art in England, which had previously only existed in the mainstream in tabloid-outrage.
The collection is vast, and is supported by an equally impressive building. The Mark Rothko room is magnificent, and has retained much of the old Tate's sombre, meditative atmosphere.
However the Tate has chosen to display the work by theme, which is at times interesting, but often weak. In theory work by Richard Long and Monet fit together, but when shown together they compete for attention.
The gallery definately feels like a state museum, which tames radical works like Duchamp's 'Fountain'. Cultural icons like Andy Warhol's 'Marilyn' look like relics.
I suppose once the Tate Modern has settled down and starts supporting fresh talent it'll help British art, if only for the vast lottery grants it will attract. However it will probably always be an archive of modern art as it becomes established.
