Advantages: Excellent record of a great gig, perfect sound and visual quality
Disadvantages: Bit of swearing
Released back in 2008, Foo Fighters Live at Wembley Stadium takes the best bits from the two shows on the 6th and 7th June 2008. It is neither a best of tour nor was it highlighting the album at that time 'Echoes, Silence...'. What it does do is to demonstrate why this band that has it's roots in some heavy music, is beloved by so many, most of whom would not call themselves hard rock fans.
The 18 tracks contain some of their biggest hits such as 'Learn to Fly', 'My Hero', 'Times Like These' and of course 'Everlong'. Now ordinarily their live gigs have descended into shouty noise which can be a bit disappointing, not so here. In fact the acoustic versions complement the normal tracks perfectly. Even in a home setting, it demands your involvement.
Lasting 120 minutes, it also included a couple of cameos from Led Zeppelin legend John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page performing 'Rock and Roll' and 'Ramble On'. These performances have the effect of elevating this concert into the status of an event, one of those you had to be there and yet this release goes someway to recapturing that feeling.
In terms of the Blu ray itself well the sound and picture quality are as good as you would expect from the format. It comes on 1 disc and is filmed in an aspect ratio of 16:9 and is exempt from classification although do be aware it does have a bit of profanity from Dave Grohl in between songs whilst speaking to the crowd. The sound is in 5.1 Dolby stereo so you are in for a treat if you have a home cinema package. I suggest you clear the floor, hide the breakables and bounce round like a maniac for two hours.
It retails for around £15 on amazon and would be a worthwhile present for any fan at Christmas.
Summary: An excellent live gig displaying the power of Blu Ray
