Advantages: The only radio station on the Island
Disadvantages: Awful breakfast show presenters who think they are hilarious. (bu they are hilariously bad)
Someone once said that Isle of Wight Radio is like hospital radio, but without the anasthetic, but I'm not sure if that's entirely fair.
Isle of Wight Radio is the Island's only FM radio station dedicated to Island listeners operating out of Dodnor Park Industrial Estate in Newport (the Island's capital).
The station is usually on from around 6 in the morning until around 7 at night, from then on they go to a network station.
They usually play a selection of the most recent pop songs, to disco and party songs, along with the occasional local band.
They also report local news stories as well as weather and traffic ( yes we have traffic on the Isle of Wight!) information.
Isle of Wight Radio has a number of regular Disc Jockeys that vary in quality and, shall I say 'listenability'.
Alex Dyke, the Island's own 'shock-jock' presents a local phone-in where local issues are discussed. Fun can be had by listening to the strange collection of regular callers such as 'English Pete' and 'Pat the Builder.' This is my favourite part of the line-up. This has unfortunately been axed in favour of rubbish ten grand text auctions of late.
Other presenters unfortunately grate on your brain and you just wish they would shut up. For instance there is a woman who does the breakfast show who sounds awful and I can't stand it and have to turn it off - awful after breakfast while driving to work - sometimes it makes you just want to drive off the cliff at the Needles its that bad.
Isle of Wight Radio is a mixed bag. You can't really knock it too much for being a good local station- its also good if its snowing to tell you if you've got to go to work or not! It is very inconsistent and the music choice is very suspect, but if you like your radio local then you can't really do any worse. (so long as you remember to get up and listen after 10am.)
Summary: Good if you're a local - tune in if you're a mainlander to hear what we're like!
