Advantages: No advertising
Disadvantages: A little on the long side
I’m old enough to remember a time before Joe Whiley and have particularly enjoyed her television appearances. Here she is again on BBC 1 radio (97 -99 Fm) between 10.00 hrs and 12.45 hrs Monday to Friday.
THE SHOW
THE MUSIC
A laid back middle of the road sound a little more sophisticated than the young sound paraded on TOP of THE POPS for the school years generation. Something for mums and dads or those listening over the tannoy at work. This is what I thought 1 year ago when I first wrote about Joe. Today examples of punk and rap also included in her play list Bon Jovi and U2.
WHAT ELSE
The programme is interspersed with NEWS bulletins items of interest from current events and interviews with special guests. Occasional mentions of weather predictions. Some phone in slots where Jo and her audience made light conversation. I heard testicules mentioned in connection a competition for safe sex sacks (sacks going out to people who phone in). All this interwoven with Jo’s pleasant running commentary. Newsbeat featuring Tony Blair on pensions followed the show.
I THINK
At 2 hours 45 minutes I found the show a little on the long side. I would have liked more music of the same kind. I have not had time to listen to the programme during school vacations; it might change its style. Because it is the BBC no advertising - that would be just too much. I guess if you don’t like it you can switch off or tune in elsewhere.
UPDATES later.
Summary: More modern sounds from the BBC

- 25/05/06 whilst if find Jo lovely in many ways, her show seems to sum up the insipid nature of radio one these days. Still she's miles better than Chris "I'm so in love with myself" Moyles. Just my opinion. |
