Advantages: Captain Marky Mark, great selection of older music

Disadvantages: Not the place to look for modern music

Magic radio station actually has stations across the country. Before I moved up to Newcastle I lived in Teesside, listening to their version - Magic 1170. Not having to change radio stations on moving even helped the homesickness a touch!

Magic's tagline is "the best of sixties, seventies and more" and this should give you a clue what they specialise in. If you want sixties, seventies - even eighties! - music, then you'll do well on this station. If you're wanting music produced in the last two decades, you need to look elsewhere.

I've been told that one of the reasons I love Magic is its predictability - the knowledge that it will never produce some new and irritating song which it will then play repeatedly. I can't argue with this - old familar irritating songs somehow just don't have the same effect.

One of the reasons I enjoy Magic however is the traffic and travel. They actually have a little man in a helicopter - Captain Marky Mark in Starburst 1 - up keeping an eye on things in rush hour and reporting back. He's a great personality who rubs along well with the morning presenter - Steve Coleman. Their morning joking can often make me grin when I'm still sleepy and grumpy.

Summary: Great for those of us living in the past
