Advantages: good music, good traffic news (most of Derbyshire covered)
Disadvantages: crackly in places (when in dips)
PEAK 107 FM NOW KNOWN AS PEAK FM - BECAUSE IT CAN BE FOUND ON 107.4 FM IN CHESTERFIELD AND SHEFFIELD AND 102 FM IN MATLOCK AND ALFRETON.
The following regular features appear at fixed times during the day as indicated.
NEWS
This gives local, national and international news information every hour on the hour, it also gives local sports news.
HEADLINES
Every hour on the half hour (e.g. 7.30am, 6.30pm) there are “new bytes” giving the basic headlines of the news that will be coming up in the next half hour’s News show. This is basically just a few minutes advertising the news updates and is often frustrating as the headlines are intriguing but do not give the whole story away – so you have to listen out for the news show.
TRAVEL/TRAFFIC NEWS
This gives information on bus, train and traffic news where known. All the information is supplied by the locals affected on 01246 267117 and mainly covers from Sheffield city centre to Ripley including M1 junctions 27-34, with occasional news about jncs 24-26. This is every 30 mins and is about quarter past the hour and quarter to the hour (i.e 7.15am and 7.45am). However, when there is a severe problem (for example on the motorway) then these are supplemented with regular updates.
BREAKFAST SHOW – “SHAUN AND BECKY AT BREAKFAST”
Hosted by Shaun Goldsmith and Becky Measures from 6am till 10am, this feature includes “It’s your birthday”, a playback hour (between 9 and 10 am where you have to guess the year being played, with clues), unusual songs such as “White Socks”, the “Cup of Char” song, etc, and the Tease files, which are brain teasers such as “2 mums and 2 daughter went shopping for shoes, All bought a pair but on their return there were only 3 pairs of shoes. Why” You can email the presenters at breakfast@peak107.com and email the answers to the tease files at tease@peak107.com
TOP SIX AT SIX
This show is played by Craig Peat between 6pm and 6.30pm as part of the AFTERNOON SHOW, where the public get to vote on their top six favourite songs from the current Top 40 show (which is played every Sunday afternoon on this radio show). You vote from 5pm to 6pm and they are played in reverse order after the 6 o’clock news. NOT HEARD THIS PLAYING FOR A WHILE SO MAY HAVE STOPPED THIS FEATURE.
Richard Spinks hosts the 7pm to 9pm slot, which includes the following shows:
70’s at 7
Seventies songs every weekday evening from 7pm
80’s at 8
Eighties songs every weekday evening from 8pm
90’s at 9
Nineties songs every weekday evening from 9pm
10PM – MIDNIGHT SHOW
I rarely hear this show as I am either tucked up in bed or watching TV but it is a request show, mainly love songs with debates on a variety of topics.
SPORTS SHOWS
The weekend is the main times for the sports shows with live commentaries from local matches and local teams away matches from 1pm on Saturdays. Back of the Net with often full coverage of a match which concerns a local team (e.g Chesterfield, Sheffield, Alfreton, Matlock, etc). Has a section called Rant or Rave for discussion on sports.
REGULAR EVENTS
Peak 107 FM host the following live music events:
1.Bolsover Firework display (last Saturday in October). This is usually a themed evening e.g. Space, Dinosaurs, Magic, etc. There is a stage where they hold competitions, local bands perform, meet the stars of the radio show, dance or other acts show off their skills, and then the final countdown before the firework and laser display.
2.Christmas “Switch on” at New Market Place, Chesterfield, at the end of November or early December.
3.Annual roadshow at local events including car shows, Chatsworth events, etc.
4.Medieval market (see my Chesterfield review for more details)
COMPETITIONS
The radio station holds regular competitions, some for fun and some for prizes including money. There is “a competition with no name” where they act out a scene from a movie in the style of another movie and you have to guess both. The tease files are just for fun (see above). They have recently had a memory competition like the conveyor belt from the Generation Game to win vouchers for a Sheffield store.
MUSIC
Yes, yes I can hear you all saying “but what about the music!”. Well, it claims to have a 50/50 music mix from yesterday and today – their words not mine, but I agree with them. They have popular music (see Top 6 at 6), older music (see 70s at 7, etc), rock music, country music, etc. They often have all request weekends, 60’s weekends or a themed show e.g. a particular type of music such as Rock, etc. They try to play “3 in a row” i.e. three songs back to back. They recently had a Kylie weekend.
This is a commercial radio station so there are a lot of adverts (even the time has its own sponsor), with irritating but memorable theme tunes – I sang along to the Carcraft advert, without realising it was an advert!!
There is something for everyone at this radio station and if you don’t like what they are playing – all you have to do is ring up or email them at peakfm.net asking them to play what you do want. You can’t ask fairer than that! They also have a phone and text number to use, but I can't remember them!!
The frequency is 107.4fm and this covers from Sheffield to Ripley, but they have added more masts in the Peak district and now cover Buxton to Bakewell and Matlock on 102fm, too.
This is my favourite radio station, which I use on the way to work at Ripley. I couldn’t cope without it’s useful information on the traffic situation and the music is good, too.
