Advantages: Good tunes
Disadvantages: Some poor dj's
Radio 1 is a popular music radio station from the BBC. It's available throughout the UK on FM or DAB and around the world via the world wide web.
I think it's fair to say that I'm not in the target audience for radio 1's standard audience, which I think is probably 12 to 30 year olds. I'm sadly a long way over that! However I've been a fan since not long after the station launched (in 1967!) and have stuck with it over the years.
The station plays popular music from the charts during the day, and then goes a bit more alternative with lesser known rock music in the evenings. It plays more dance music and urban music at the weekend (or so I'm told by my son - I only listen during the day on weekdays).
A big plus for me over commercial radio is the lack of advertisements on Radio 1. There is sometimes a bit too much talking on the Breakfast show with Chris Moyles, but he's often very funny so I can forgive him if he prattles on for a while. He also gets some big name stars on his show and interviews them in a very humorous manner.
Mid morning has been the slot for Jo Whiley for the last number of years and she is fairly inoffensive. She regularly has artists performing in her 'live lounge' where the band or singer will cover a famous song which is always very entertaining.
Edith Bowman does a show in the early afternoon where she reads out listeners text messages and has a film expert take over her show most days.
Scot Mills has the drive time slot. His show isn't so good and has lots of fake items with 'Chappers' and 'Becky'. It always seems like a very poor imitation of the Chris Moyles breakfast show to me.
All in all Radio1 plays good music, even for the middle-aged generation, albeit with some irritating dj's.
Summary: One of the best universal radio stations around
