Radio 3Newest Review: ... page: "A laid-back, esoteric mix of music from across the globe, ranging from Mali to Bali, and from medieval chant to 21st-century electronica. Presented by Fiona Talkington and Verity Sharp." I have been listening to it now for a few weeks and I have to say I'm becoming something of a fan. I enjoy a wide range of different music and this programme certainly caters to that taste. You will find on a typical evening classical pieces rubbing shoulders with rock, folk, ethnic and progressive music the only thing that doesn't seem to get an airing, thankfully is the current pop (i.e. boy bans etc.). If the music has a comm... more |

Why not try Late Junction? This Radio 3 programme is transmitted Monday to Thursday from 22:15 to Midnight and its website can be accessed by using the link below. http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/world/latejunction.shtml Why do I think its worth recommending? Well quoting what it says about it's self on it's home page: "A laid-back, esoteric mix of music from across the globe, ranging from Mali to Bali, and from medieval chant to 21st-century electronica. Classic FM has a lot to answer for. This "let's make classical music popular" approach has dumbed down Radio 3 as well. Though not entirely. In the old days, late morning was always (it seemed) the time when unknown and struggling young musicians were given a chance but always played awful "pointed" music for such combinations as oboe and piano, but I must say that these days a lot of the daytime repertoire is good solid stuff. The BBC Orchestras series in the afternoon is excellent (a week of Bruckner symphonies last week, for instance) they have retained Composer of the Week and dear old Choral Evensong (why never Choral ... I'm totally with Gwenick on this one. I'm a Classical music fan, and there isn't much choice as far as radio stations go. Classic FM is downright annoying, so much so that I really can't listen to it - it makes my blood boil. So I turn to Radio 3, because I remember it being a great station when I was a teenager. But I now find that it's full of presenters being incredibly boring, pretentious, and very much contained in a pretend world containing them and celebrities, but not you. It's very much how I imagine royal tea parties to be; everyone name-dropping non-stop; "Oh yes, well last time I saw Igor....blah,blah.." I mean what ... Read the complete review

Being a classical music fan I used to really enjoy sitting down and listening to Radio 3. The variety of music was always very wide and the presenters were interesting to listen to. Programmes which involved more discussion than playing used to fascinating and well worth listening to. But that has all changed. The good selection of music is still there, but I now find the presenters very tedious to listen to, and the "informative" programmes very boring and un-inspiring. What happened to all the good presenters, or is it the same people, just not doing such a good job? I am really disappointed by this fall in standard from Radio 3 as I do not enjoy ...
