Advantages: Fun and entertaining
Disadvantages: none
I like to listen to music or in particular the radio whilst I'm travelling or out for a run in the car. For donkeys years I had followed the trend and listened to Radio One, but after changing the battery in my car all stations were lost and I pressed the retune button. When the tuning had completed the station that was in place of Beep 1 was Real Radio.
I listened for a while and thought................now this has a slightly different approach, it's more light-hearted, more of my kind of music and heck it's very entertaining. If you had just tuned in you'd be thinking that the programme you were listening to was some comedy thingy, but no all the shows presented by some very very good presenters have a lazy we can do what we want feel to them.
The station broadcasts in 3 main regions, Scotland, Yorkshire and Wales. The frequency for each region is 100-101 106-106 and 105-106 respectively. The main shows I listen to on the Scotland station are the Breakfast and the Drive home show. Robin Galloway and Cat Harvey are a really funny pair who present the breakfast show. They just seem to be joking about all the time, but do play some great music in between. Part of the show contains the Real Radio Wind Up where Robin pretends to be someone usually old Mrs Galloway and winds up a viewer who has been set up by a friend or family member. Some of these wind ups are absolutely hilarious and have me in stitches. I wonder how people can be so gullible.
As most radio stations Real Radio has hourly news updates and weather forecasts. It has advertisements but they are not in as abundance as I thought they might be, and often carry the chance of winning a nice little prize.
They have lots of competitions where sponsors donate excellent prizes and during this month they have re-introduced what is probably the best comp they have had. Last year it was called the Real Radio Fugitive this year it is The Real radio Renegade. This is a man travelling all over Scotland with a bounty on his head. When he contacts Real Radio in the morning he gives a cryptic clue as to where he might be and tells the audience how much is on his head today. It is usually 2-3 thousand pounds. His voice is disguised on the phone and then the hunt begins. All you have to do to win is find him by asking everyone you see in the area he might be hiding "" are you the REAL RADIO RENEGADE " if you are lucky he will pass you a mobile to contact the station and your in the money. It has caused a huge stir here in Scotland and I myself have been asked on 2 occasions if I was the real radio renegade. Remember if you don't ask you can't win is the catch phrase for this game. Once caught he moves on and phones up with his new clue and new bounty. It's great fun and some people travel all over to try and find him.
In the evening they have the Real Radio Football Phone in with Ewan Cameron and Alan Rough, in this show they discuss the latest football news and have a phone in where viewers air their point of view. This once again is very funny although it does have a serious side to it too. The presenters are excellent together and the show flows very well indeed.
I have only heard a few of the shows during the day due to other commitments I. e. WORK, but they are of an equally high standard. One of he evening shows is a jukebox show where the viewers select the music to be played, and once again there is a large amount of humour.
So needless to say my car radio has remained tuned into 100-101fm and Real Radio, whether I’m just totally p****d off at the thought of going to work or equally as P****d off at having had a crap day I know I can rely on real radio to provide me with some decent music and a good old laugh too boot.
Summary: A great station which is a lot of fun
