      Advantages

      Disadvantages

A really good mix of songs from shows, both old and new, popular and less well known.

As a fan of musicals, I love to listen to CDs of songs from shows. As Christmas approached I searched online and decided that this compilation set of CDs looked like it would provide great value for money, retailing at £5.34 on Amazon, and would be a good one to put on my Christmas list. I am so pleased that someone did choose to buy it for me and I've been listening to the various CDs ever since.

The boxed collection consists of 5 CDs with 20 tracks on each one (100 in all, as you may have guessed). I've not had a 5 CD set before and was surprised to find that they all fit into a box the same size as some double CD sets that I have, so great for saving space on my shelf. The cover is simple and attractive and this was partly why I was drawn to it. The 'Musical' title forms a crescent shaped title over a background of red theatre curtains and stage lights - just right to get me in the mood!

The Demon Music Group compiled this collection, along with other well renowned titles in the 100 Hits series , such as 80s Rewind, American Songbook and Voices, to name but a few. This reputation as a known company for producing compilation CDs also led me to believe that this would be a good purchase. It was released in 2009.

Most other musical CDs that I have are a single CD. I tend to find that there is a great deal of repetition of the same old favourites from a fairly limited selection of shows. Not so with 100 Hits! Each CD has a varied selection of songs from shows both old and new. There are also some songs that I had not heard before and it has been great to get to know those. Of course there are many of the popular songs including' Memory' from Cats, 'The Music of the Night' from Phantom of the Opera and' Any Dream will Do' from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. In total 62 musicals are represented; it's hard to think of a show that has not been included. Some of them I had not even heard of such as Aida, A Little Night of Music, Man of La Mancha, Woman in White and Nine. 'Unusual Way' from Nine, sung by Elaine Page, however, is now probably one of my favourite tracks. I also love singing along to some of the old shows - Cabaret, South Pacific and Sweet Charity particularly. I've not seen these shows but my appetite has been whetted and I'll be heading to them now when the opportunity arises, thanks to the inspiration of these CDs.

Obviously I could go on forever listing songs that I love listening to from this complilation and I would recommend anyone who thinks they might like it to browse the full list.

The inlay card includes details of the songs included, including the show from which they are taken and the recording artist as well as the music and song writers and production company and year of release. Sadly there is no list of words, to allow even more 'sing a long' opportunity. I guess it would make quite a fat booklet if words were included for all 100 songs. The list of contributing artists is impressive too. It's not one of those CDs where you think you could have done a better job singing them yourself, but has the likes of Ruthie Henshall, Claire Moore, Stephanie Lawrence and Marti Webb to name but a few.

I love to belt out a good rousing song when I'm driving or doing the housework. Somehow the chores don't seem half so bad when accompanied by ' All that Jazz' or 'If my Friends Could See Me Now'. Five CDs mean that it's been possible to have one ready to play wherever I am. Even other members of the family have been known to put them on too, but my husband has also politely requested that I turn the volume down a little!
