Deja Entendu - Brand New:
... is the introduction song to this album and it has not been overlooked by the band. I find a lot of album introductions are pointless and half hearted but this song is quite the exception. 1:42 is a nice length for this atmospheric, calm, well thought about song. The song sets a mood for the album but not a pace and the second song, Sic Transit Gloria, really kicks the listener up the backside with it s hard... Modern Life Is Rubbish - Blur ... classic Britpop album born out of the 90s. But a classic album for all times? For Tommorow is a fantastic opener, Damon s cockney geezer cuts over the screeching violins and chugging guitar. Much as the album title suggests the song deals with the reality of life, telling the story of a young couple living in London, I very much get the live to work vibe. It s a reality that couples go out for drives on the weekend to convince themselves that they are making the most of their lives and then coming home and sitting in front of the telly of an evening. Blue Valentine - Tom Waits ... Valentine in two words is quite an accurate description of Waits lyrical and musical style. This album however sees him get a little nastier. Red Shoes By The Drugstore sees Waits growl over sparse musical backing. He paints vivid pictures of the Fifth Street in Los Angeles putting on his best Louis Armstrong impression doing his beat poet act, a kind of jazz rap. The lyrics are startingly poignant and Waits lyrics could easily be released as poetry. This song at the very least. It s nothing his never done before but it s nice listening. Small Change - Tom Waits ... Waits made a massive musical leap fom his debut album to Small Change. And perhaps discovered what he really wanted to do musically, the change is instantly noticeable. Step Right Up sounds like a beat poet singing along to smoky club jazz. The jazzy elements were always element in Waits work but he takes it one step further. Donning his best Sesame Street character voice he creates a copletely new guise for himself.
