In A Reverie - Lacuna Coil ... first album from popular Italian gothic metal band Lacuna Coil catches them before they hit the big time, and is consequently a more true-to-form doom metal album, complete with beauty and the beast vocals alternating between Christina Scabbia s haunting singing and the death metal growls of her boys. This is a style used to great effect by The Gathering, Theatre of Tragedy and others, and while Lacuna Coil was only ever distinctly average, the vocals are the definite highlight here, the music itself being fairly simplistic and derivative of the lighter death-doom bands of the nineties such as Paradise Lost. Welcome To Sky Valley - Kyuss ... Welcome to Sky Valley (or to use its lesser-known correct title, Kyuss ) is perhaps the finest work the American stoner rock outfit ever produced, and certainly one of the defining works of the genre. A little more energetic than its predecessor, this is still predominantly slow and contented music that never sounds so much lazy as under the influence, the tracklist being helpfully divided into three movements to aid comparison. Pacific Ocean Blue - Dennis Wilson ... first heard this album about ten years ago when a friend lent me his original vinyl copy. It didn t really sink in at first, but after a few years, I suddenly realised it had become my favourite album. When it was FINALLY issued on cd recently, I got a little offended when people didn t immediately love it as I do! If you are coming to this record as a fan of The Beach Boys early material, forget it. There is little or nothing here that is related to that sound. If, however, you are a fan of their more introspective work, circa Pet Sounds and beyond, and feel you could go on a journey even deeper into those sounds, then this is the album for you.
