For anyone who doesn't know, Bryan Adams is a Canadian singer, songwriter, musician with a husky voice, who has been around more years than he probably cares to remember. Definitely a lot more than 18 years!
The lyrics to this album, which was released in 1996, are printed on the inlay, so you can sing along like me if you wish.
The album starts with a rousing rock song The Only Thing that Looks Good on Me is You. The woman he is praising makes designer clothes like Armani, Gucci and Versace irrelevant to him. The lyrics are extremely flattering and sung with great passion. On the assumption that he is singing, about me, this song is very uplifting!
I think Do To You is musically the weakest track on the album but, as the very simple lyrics made me laugh the first time I heard them, and still make me smile, I couldn't not like it. Perhaps I had better tell you what it is about these monotonous (by Bryan Adams' standards) lyrics that I find funny. Well to appreciate my sense of humour, please imagine a Canadian version of the sitcom Men Behaving Badly. There is this guy, who thinks he is God's gift, trying to seduce an attractive young lady, that doesn't see anything attractive in the childlike bloke singing repeatedly to her the words, "I wanna do to you, what you do to me!" Then he gives her a gift of a request, "Let down your defences, baby, show me what you feel!" As, at best, she feels he is behaving ridiculously, my mind, which may well be warped, can then work overtime on how she will make her feelings known!!!
He follows this up with the slow, truly sexy, "soft and tender" Let's Make It a Night to Remember ballard. "I've never touched somebody like the way I touch your body, now I never want to let you body go." Yessssss! I'll surrender to this one, Brian! "I never want this night to end" either!
In the title track, 18 Til I Die, a rock song, he reverts back to wanting to be a big kid, but the lyrics suggest that he is already "18 going on 55" even though he doesn't want to admit it yet and wants to "live for the minute" and act like an 18 year old. He sounds insecure about life here, and more in need of a mother than a partner. Musically great, but are you trying to turn me off again Brian?
In Star, a slow and beautiful ballard, he starts singing mature lyrics again, and these lyrics demand to be listened to. "Everybody wants some kindness - everybody needs a break. We all need a shining star when things get hard to take, so tonight we're gonna wish upon a star."
He's back to being "saucy" again with I Wanna Be Your Underwear! Musically this is slow with strong beats. He doesn't just want to be my underwear, but my wet T-shirt, shower, tattoo, bed, sheets, spoon, lipstick, and lots more! As you now know, he doesn't hold back about what he wants here, and he wants a lot! I find this amusing rather than sexy, but if it makes me smile with amusement, then that's great by me.
We're Gonna Win, is what some might call a "noisy" and upbeat rock track. I tried to count how many times he shouts "We're Gonna Win!" on this track, but I didn't have enough fingers and toes! There is a little more to the lyrics than this though. This sounds like the sort of thing that should be chanted by enthusiastic, if musically better than average, football supporters. "We're gonna be the champions . . . . we'll make you look like an amateur. Until the final whistle it's a war!" In case you haven't guessed, he sounds very confident and aggressive on this track.
The pace slows right down for I Think About You, and I'll Always be Right There, which are heartfelt love ballards. I'm yours again Brian! Thank you for putting this marvellous poetry to music.
He then sings the upbeat It Ain't a Party - If you Can't Come Round. Well I wouldn't it expect it to be, after hearing your thoughts about how important I am in the previous two tracks! Just a minute you're singing, "come back to me". Hey, I wasn't aware that I left, but a girl does need some rest.
Black Pearl changes key to a minor one, and seems to be influenced by blues as well as rock. Who is this black pearl he found in Mississippi? Apparently, "she was a hot blooded, God fearing, Gospel girl."
He slows right down and gets sexy again in You're Still Beautiful to Me, singing about a relationship still going strong after many years.
Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman? shows he isn't the type of bloke who thinks he will never to able to understand women. Women aren't all the same, but he gives some very good advice about realising when you are in love, and what to do about it if you have found true love. This Latin influenced song, with its Spanish guitar and castanets holds answers to questions some people never find. My advice is, listen to it with your partner, and wait for a reaction. Hopefully it will be a pleasant reaction. This ballard is the sort of thing you might hope for while dining with the one you love in a Spanish restaurant. Brian shows his romantic side. While I could come up with songs that could equal it, I can't think of a better romantic song than this.
We have now come to the end of an album of very mixed types of songs.
So will Brian Adams be 18 till he dies? I don't think so. Hopefully he will continue to be a very talented musician, who is still capable of changing my mood according to which of his songs I listen to, though.
In 1996, when this album was released, it was hailed as the comeback of Bryan Adams, promises that he was back to his best were made to anyone who would listen, so is it true, has he managed to reach the dizzy heights of popularity again, as nobody can deny he certainly seemed to go off the boil. There are thirteen tracks in total, and as Bryan Adams always seems to do, he starts the album off with a lot of pace with the catchy track 'The Only Thing That Looks Good On Me (Is You)'. It is real rock n roll, and the lyrics can be perceived in many different ways. 'Do To You' is a very average country/rock song, and it is not one of my favourites on the album. In truth, I find it repetitive and monotonous. This is not a song which showcases his voice, and nor does it highlight just how talented a writer the Canadian is. My first reaction on looking closer at this CD is that it is 7 years old, I was sure it was more recent. Maybe that is because it has been a while since he actually released any material of real worth, and after listening to this track, I am fearful that it may be another seven. The third song on the album is a song which feels me with complete warmth every single time I listen to it. 'Let's Make It A Night To Remember' is beautifully written, beautifully performed, and it oozes emotion, desire and wanton lust! I know that 'Everything I Do' is hated as much as it is loved, but his ballads are as good as his pacier rock songs such as 'Summer Of 69'. This track reminds me of the time when my husband and I had no responsibilities, other than making each other happy, and as it goes out of the window a little when the children come along, this song makes me want to whisk him away for a weekend where we only have each other to concentrate on. Truly beautiful with heart wrenching lyrics. Title track '18 Till I Die' is Bryan telling us that he will always be young at heart. It is upb
eat with strong guitars and drums which really grab you and get you to pay attention. 'Star' was written for one of my all time favourite films, 'Jack' starring Robin Williams (off subject, but if you have not seen this then I urge you to as soon as you can). The lyrics of this song are inspirational, but they also pull at the heart strings, and maybe that is because I relate them to a film full of raw emotion. My favourite line in the song is 'We all need a shining star when things aren't what they seem, so tonight we're gonna wish upon a star we've never wished upon before.' Simple, but so meaningful. My favourite track on the whole album, and this is where I think we start to see the real man behind the star. The hilariously titled 'I Wanna Be (Your Underwear)' is actually better than the title sounds. In the song he sings of all of the things he wants to be, and all have sexual undertones (no surprise there I am sure), such as 'I wanna be your bathrobe, when you're dripping'. It is lighthearted and a thoroughly enjoyable track. Guitar led track 'We're Gonna Win' could be about anything, but I am sure it is about football. It is ok, and I am sure on the soundtrack of a film about football or something similar, this would sound great, but again, for me it is nothing special. Another ballad with 'I Think About You'. It is all about how someone can dominate our thoughts so much that we can do nothing but think about them. It is a nice comfortable song, which would sound great just played in the background as it is so mellow, and on here his voice is at it's best, as it is just flowing and not being stretched too much. 'I'll Always Be Right There' is very much in the same vein as the previous track in the mood it creates. It is the perfect song for newlyweds to have their first dance to, as so many promises are made, and at times the lyrics are like vows, wi
th lines such as 'You're the one I trust, our time has come, we're not two people, we are one, and you're second to none'. 'It Ain't A Party...If You Can't Come Round' reminds me a lot of his earlier material from the 'Waking The Neighbours' album, but for me this a filler track as it is just not strong enough to compete with the best songs on here. 'Black Pearl' has a lot of blues influence, and as he sings about Mississippi, then I think this is a deliberate move. 'You're Still Beautiful To Me' is the kind of song that a man would need to pull out of hat to woo a woman whose bad books he is in, as the lyrics are what most girls would love to hear coming from the mouths of their men! The final track is the brilliant 'Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman?'. The Mediterranean influences are clear from the opening bars of the song. Another ballad which has featured on a soundtrack, and this time it was the Johnny Depp flop 'Don Juan De Marco'. If every man in the world listened to this song, and took the words on board, then the lovelife of many women would be made so much more pleasurable. The mood that this song creates is magical, and as much as I love his rock songs, I know deep in my heart, that he needs to stick with this genre to make it back to where he used to be. The front cover is easily recognisable as it is bright orange and has a picture of Bryan holding a bright red guitar against the backdrop, and whilst the cover is eyecatching, I have to admit that not every track here is as captivating. If I was a teacher, I feel that I would have to say 'could do better', as this album has some high points, but there are too many lows to make it a classic album, and I know that Bryan Adams has albums full of truly world class material still inside his head, and I hope that we see it sooner rather than later.
In 1997 I was lucky enough to attend the ’18 til I die’ concert; it was one of the best I have attended with a superb atmosphere, music of similar quality to a CD and an exciting performance. Bryan Adams is a very talented singer song writer from Canada. He is most known for 'Summer of '69', a rock and roll tune that describes the summer in college when he first picked up a guitar, and 'Everything I do, I do it for you' a soft rock love song that was the theme to 'Robin Hood:Prince of thieves' and despite the low key billing in the movie, became a massive hit world wide and equaled the record for time spent at no.1 in the UK (I think it was no.1 for 26 weeks.) '18 till I die' was Bryan Adam's next album after the 'Everything I do' album and provided many great new songs. There are actually two versions of this album, one featuring the duet with Barbara Streisand 'Finally found someone'. The album features a combination of rock and roll and love ballads, and strikes a good balance between the two; the album also changes the tempo several times with some great upbeat songs like ‘We’re gonna win’ and ‘Your underwear (I wanna be) to some slow beat songs like ‘I think about you’ and ‘I’ll always be right there’ Here are some of the better songs on the album. Only Thing That Looks Good On Me Is You This is a raunchy rock and roll song that has some 'sexy' lyrics and a very upbeat rock & roll tune. I often find myself singing this in the shower. When Bryan performed this upbeat song in a fashion awards show he was asked to wear Armarni suits. As the song says that he doesn’t wear Armani suits, he turned up in jeans and a t-shirt. Let's Make A Night To Remember Typical of Bryan Adam's music, this song combines some great music with excellent lyrics. It
is essentially a rock & roll love song that has a great beat. It tells how we should make every night a ‘Night to Remember’. It has a good tune that makes you sing along, especially to the chorus. 18 Til I Die The title track of the album is an upbeat, inspirational song. It basically sends a message about living life as if you were young. It is a great rock anthem that I hope will become a classic in the years to come. Star This song is a sad ballad/ soft rock song that features some wonderful lyrics and a great tune. It basically says that you should not give up in the low periods of your life. The song is stark and real and many will be able to identify with it. Your Underwear, (I Wanna Be) Another rauchy song that has great (funny) lyrics and a wonderful beat. The live performance features a gigantic set of dancing underwear!!! This is a sexy song that really tells about an obsession of a woman and that you want to be everything that she does. We're Gonna Win Pure rock & roll. This song is a fast paced song that can be used for inspiration. It basically says don't accept anything except winning! This song uses the most heavy guitar on the album and is best when played very loud. I Think About You A love song that is really about the times when you first fall in love and cannot get your new love out of your mind. This is a wonderfully soft rock song that has some nice lyrics. Again this has a pleasant melody that will have you singing along. I'll Always Be Right There My favorite song of the whole album. Mushy people all around the world love this song as it seems to mirror people’s feelings for each other perfectly. It is a soft love ballad that has great lyrics and beautiful rhythm and music. I often sing this song while looking into my wife's eyes. It is a deep song that w
ill inspire many emotions; this should be saved for the last dance at parties and weddings. The melody is very gentle, although in parts it is upbeat. Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman? This song is amazing. It describes what a woman really wants and is very insightful. Men and women should listen to this song. It is very beautiful and quite deep and is wonderful when performed live. The music is almost Mexican in style and is great to dance to. There are several other tracks on the album hat are typical of Brian's style but not really worth mentioning. Overall this album is one of the best I own and has many wonderful songs on it for all kinds of different moods. You find yourself laughing and crying at different points on the CD. The quality is consistent throughout making this great album for your money.
When this album came out I couldn`t wait to get my hands on it and after all this time I still listen to this album.. Its simply amazing.. It might not have the biggest hits like "Everything I do" and "Please forgive me" but its got gr8 GROOVY tracks like "The only thing hat looks good on me is you" and " I wanna be your underwear" Its got a gr8 rock ballad called "Lets make a night to remmeber" which is among one of his best songs" Other hits like "star" and "18 til I die" are not far behind.. My personal favorite is "Black pearl" cause of its guitaring and cool lyrics..
When this album was released, it had been nearly five years since he released Waking Up The Neighbours, a groundbreaking album. Since the release of that album, Adams had put out two big singles in "Please Forgive Me," and "All For Love," a trio with Sting and Rod Stewart. The magic Bryan achieved in his early days seemed to be coming back... Almost. As the case with all albums by all artists, the song has it's bad moments, good moments, and the occasional outstanding moment. The bad of course include "We're Gonna Win," and "Do To You." The good include, "Let's Make A Night To Remember," and "18 Til I Die." The outstanding includes, "Star," from the Robin Williams movie JACK, "Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman?" from Don Juan De Marco and the wonderful, "I'll Always Be Right There." The rest falls mostly between Good and outstanding, with the occasional falling after poor. Over all...a good album, but I believe we could have gotten better.
Canada is such a big place that you would have thought they had produced hundreds of rock stars but they have not. They have however given us Bryan Adams, one of the greatest song writers ever. 18 till I die contains 13 tracks of pure genius. You have the pumping track 'We're gonna win' alongside slower tracks such as 'Let's make a night to remember' and my personal favourite 'Have you ever really loved a woman?' A very emotional album.
Released in 1996, '18 Till I Die' is probably the first of Bryan Adams albums to be defined as contemporary rock, rather than pure rock. There is a good selection of songs on this album, from the high spirited and fun songs like 'Do To You, '18 til I Die', '(I Wanna Be) Your Underwear' and 'We're Gonna Win' to the ballads, 'Let's Make A Night To Remember', 'Star', 'I'll Always Be Right There', 'You're Still Beautiful To me' and 'Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman?'. Complete with a new, sharper and more modern edge, this is a great album to sing along to, with the volume turned up high - is there any other way to listen to Bryan Adams? It will lift your spirits and blow away the cobwebs. Recommended to anyone who likes rock music.
I find myself grinning every time I listen to this tape in the car. Energetic and "refined raw" is the best way for me to describe it. The ballads also feel very genuine and sincere to me, especially "I'll always be there for you","A night to remember" and "Have you ever loved a woman" . The hard rocking tune, "I want to be your underwear", (although silly) does engender playfulness. I also find myself screaming out the words to "Black Pearl" not for it's content but for the rocking energy. By the time I get to work, I'm ready for the day, in all it's splendour. Seriously though, this album makes me happy and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who doesn't want to take life so seriously. Great stress reliever!! Fun album!
