Advantages: Excellent production
Disadvantages: Girls' voices a little irritating at times
OH MY GOD!TWO SCHOOL GIRLS KISSING IN THE RAIN!is what the majority of europe's public thought when t.A.t.u graced their TV sets.Yet once their eyes had done the job of shocking them, their ears left them almost unconcious, unable to believe there is actually a decent tune behind this clever, albeit at the same time stupid, marketing ploy. 'All the things she said',the title of t.A.T.u's first single, has become the best pop record to be unleashed in eons. The fact that they are two lesbian teenagers,Julia & i can't remember the other one's name, who regurarly stun everyone with their on-stage antics is quite irrelevant, for even if they were two lumps of rock they would still sell many records with the song. It's echoingly haunting beginning signals the beginning of something different, and by the time youv'e got to the first verse you know you won't be hearing it once. The dramatic synths, spindling loops and grundging guitars, accompanied by the helium camp of the girl's vocals prove irresistable and predictably they shot to number one around the world. So,after all that,no one expects an album, let alone one bothering to listen to.Yet with Trevor Horn(responsible for Leann Rhymes'Can't fight the moonlight'&'video killed the radio star')it wasn't going to be difficult to come up with something more then their smash hit. Curiously titled,'200km in the wrong lane'shows t.A.T.u may be more than a one hit wonder. The album strangely enough begins with another song,'Not gonna get us'.Sounding a little like 'All the things she said'it isn't as good yet it still hits all the right buttons. 'Show me love' is more of the same,a repetetive(yet somewhat effective)technique t.A.T.u use in which they have sweet, simple vocals for the verses then at the chorus raise their vocal temperament with the music and repeat the same phrase many times. <
br>'30 minutes' is a little different, being more subdued and giving the listener more chance to hear the girl's dolly like voices. It all gets better on the 5th track,a cover of 'How soon is now?' by the smiths. The music is well done and the girl's vocals match the song well. It's follow up,'clowns' is nothing special and doesn't merit a description. The most curious song on the album is 'Malchik Gay'in which the girls sing about a fancying a gay boy.Weird huh?still,it's so unbelievably catchy you'll have trouble teasing it out of your mind. Then everything slows down for t.A.T.u's only ballad 'Stars'.It's a real difference to the rest of the album, with an eastern influence and apart from 'All the thing she said' the best song on the album. So,8 tracks in english, now t.A.T.u go back to their roots. All the songs theyv'e sung they repeat on the second half of the album im russian.'All the things she said' to me actually sounds better this way, undeniably more natural. So,t.A.T.u have produced a fantastic single and a decent album. If you actually listen to the lyrics, pointless as it sounds it actually all makes sense. The girls are two lesbians,in love who want to run away & escape from a unfair society. This is what makes '200km in the wrong lane' better then just good production as well as publicity.
